Two weeks ago, my friend Dan Hess (owner of the famous MoreBirths X account) and I recorded a long conversation to discuss what drives changes in fertility, what (if anything) should be done about it, and our differing perspectives. The format is a quasi-interview where I ask Dan questions, and then we go back and forth. He’s full of knowledge and quite interesting. Listen to our conversation.

The total fertility rate (TFR) for the United States is about 1.6, the lowest it’s ever been, and we’re nowhere near the bottom. Declining birthrates are going to become major public policy and economic issues soon. You’re going to hear more about this issue soon. Here’s a good introduction.
