While it would not address the problem of existing student loan debt, i think stronger mandates for basic classes in economics and financial decision making in high school, would solve most student debt problems as it would drive people away from getting college degrees that are not worth the (public and private) resources spent on them. If more people had to go through a course where they had to do draft financial planning under multiple scenarios from 18 through retirement and death, then you would have less people making bad financial decisions that impact them for the rest of their lives when they are basically still children.
