I'd love to have 30 million illegal immigrants in the country, and I'm hopeful that new tech might get us closer to that.

An obvious barrier for all sorts of foreigners to want to come to the United States is that they don't speak English and would have trouble getting along. But AI should go a long way towards fixing that. If AI manages to achieve real-time interpretation among the world's languages, all sorts of aspects of life would get easier for immigrants.

Another difficulty for foreigners is that the government's legitimate regulation of driver's licenses means that even if you can get into the country, if you're here illegally, then it's difficult to get the normal means of mobility. But driverless cars are already moving around the streets of some major metros as commercial taxis, and as that spreads, not being able to get a driver's license may become much less of a problem.

If drones big enough to carry a human become widespread, I can also imagine that a short trip from International Waters by drone to some lonely stretch of coastline might become an appealing means of entry.

So while 30 million illegals is still a stretch goal for now, it might become more feasible over the next 10 or 20 years, even if the laws stay ugly.
