Loved the article! My one quibble is the use of the term "chaos theory" at the end. Chaos theory has another definition, which is basically systems where small changes in initial conditions can have big impacts on outcomes (the "butterfly effect" is one popularization).
Interestingly, I think the undoing of the Trump movement and the nativists riding the MAGA wave would be the same chaos that they have now created.
Even the minority of US voters who are against any kind of immigration, they are nearly 100% against chaos in their own neighbourhoods over so called immigration enforcement. They want the evil immigrants deported but they also want their lawn mover to come every Thursday and charge only $40.
Renee Good's mother said that she voted for President Trump thinking that Federal Agents would protect American citizens (she probably meant from the evil immigrants) but then her own US citizen daughter was gunned down by an ICE agent in a totally needless confrontation that was escalated by ICE agents themselves.
I highly doubt that any reasonable nativist wants scenes like these unfolding in their own neighbourhoods.
I do think there is a depth to which nativists can fall, but I might be wrong as I have been wrong about them in past.
Having grown up in AZ, this feels spot on. Acknowledging/empathizing with people’s anxiety surrounding the ‘chaos’ while offering hard evidence to the contrary… I hope politicians take this approach going forward.
