There's really no point in acting like someone who entered the country without permission, or stayed longer than they had permission to, isn't breaking the law. When Cato or anyone else quietly moves the bar to "these are people who haven't committed any violent crimes," they make people who want immigration laws enforced feel like they're being dealt with dishonestly. This is a poor, disengenous article. If you want to sway people, you have to be honest about their objections.

Many thanks to David Bier for collecting this information, providing the illustrative graphs, and writing the commentary !

I suspect it depends on what is meant by “crime”. CATO apparently only cares about injury crimes where people are hurt physically or their property is stolen.

I wonder how CATO looks at drunk driving, trespass, and counterfeiting which are process crimes, much the way of illegal immigration.

This is a war about census and house seats. Democrats flooded blue cities to gain census and house seats and Republicans are taking them away. All evil as this article willfully misses this very important point and takes a side in this evil battle.
