I might define nationalism as an attitude and ideology that elevates nationality over other identities and the nation over other communities, mandates that polity and nation should be coextensive, and urges moral obligations to solidarity among fellow nationals by downplaying moral obligations that bridge national distinctions.

I think there's actually less nationalism in this sense today than one or two generations ago. Nationalism is reactionary and backward-looking now, unlike in the past. Nationalists are angry because they're losing. Nationalist attitudes used to be more taken for granted.
